Hoy os voy a hablar un poco de lo que según el maestro, the one and only Ildefons Cerdá, iba a ser el centro neurálgico de Barcelona. La plaza de las Glorias Catalanas, lejos de ser un punto como Plaza Cataluña, que viene siendo el meeting point de Barceloneses y foráneos, era basicamente un nudo de comunicaciones a mitad camino entre el Eixample, el Fort Pienc y el Poble Nou. Digo era, porque tras el lavado de cara que se le ha y se le sigue dando ha cambiado completamente su imagen.
Today, I'm going to talk to you about what according to the one and only, Ildefons Cerdá, was aimed to become the center of Barcelona. The Glorias square, far from being the "meeting point" that Plaza Catalunya is, was basically a spot where high speed roads collided, between the Eixample, the Fort Pienc and Poble Nou. And I'd like to remark the "was" because after the treatment it's been getting during the last decade, it has completely changed its image.
1. DHUB
Uno de los puntos que articula esta plaza es el Disseny HUB, o para los amantes de las siglas, "DHUB", que queda mas molón y chachi y contemporáneo. A cargo del equipo de arquitectos MBM, este edificio toma aspecto de un paralelepípedo que se prolonga y vuela sobre la calle, plantea entradas a diversos niveles, conectando así los distintos espacios sobre los que se sitúa, e incorpora el agua y las cubiertas como espacios públicos. Estos días está siendo la sede de la "Barcelona Design Week", del 11 al 21 de Junio, de la cual tuve el placer de asistir a la exposición "Dutch bike" del artista Yksi Expo. Muy recomendable.
One of the hot spots in the area, is the Disseny Hub, which stands for Barcelona Design Center. MBM architects were in charge of the project, a building that is set in different levels, with a shape that flies across the nearby street and that connects all the different spaces that surround it. These days, the "Barcelona Design Week" is taking place in this venue, and I had the chance to attend the "Dutch bike" art exhibit, by artist Yksi Expo. If you have some spare time, I recommend you to walk by the DHUB and take a look at all the exhibits taking place this week.
2.TORRE AGBAR. LA PUERTA DEL 22@
Uno de los nuevos iconos en el skyline de Barcelona, admirado por unos, denostado por otros tantos y que no deja indiferente a nadie. La puerta del 22@, un proyecto de renovación y revitalización de las zonas más degradadas del PobleNou, viene marcada por el dildo gigante de colorines la Torre Agbar, del equipo de arquitectos de Jean Nouvel. Un proyecto completamente fuera de escala, que no toma nada de su entorno, que no se adapta a el. Igual o peor que el parque central del Poblenou. Sin embargo, cumple su funcion de icono, y su imagen te trae automaticamente a la mente la palabra pepino Barcelona.
One of the latest icons in the skyline of the city, loved by some, hated by many others but always causing strong opinions. The gate to the 22@, a project aimed to re-develop and revitalise the worst areas of Poble Nou, is this giant coloured dildo the Agbar Tower, by the Jean Nouvel studio. A building that is completely out of scale regarding the city, that doesnt blend with the surrounding area, and that takes nothing from it. The same applies to the Central park of Poble Nou. However, it totally works as an icon that represents the city, and its image inmediately brings to your mind the word cucumber Barcelona.
3. MERCAT DELS ENCANTS
El otro espacio, aun en construcción, que cierra la plaza es el nuevo Mercat dels Encants, o mercado de los encantos para los más tiquismiquis. La forma de la cubierta, que se nos presenta como una serie de planos descontruidos, realizados en un material reflectante, tampoco deja a nadie indiferente, y a pesar de todas las polémicas y retrasos que afectan a la obra, a mi formalmente me encanta. Podría parecer obra de Zaha, pero los encargados son "Fermín Vazquez arquitectos".
The last spot, still under construction, which rounds up the square, is the new Mercat dels Encants. The shape of the roof, which shows itself as a bunch of deconstructed layers made of a reflector material really appeals to me. It may look like a project by Zaha Hadid, but it's been designed by "Fermín Vazquez arquitectos".
Así que ya sabéis, si os queréis dar un garbeo por la nueva cara de Barcelona, aprovechad la ocasion de la "Barcelona Design Week" y así matáis dos pajaros de un tiro.
